Becoming a Driving Instructor - Apply for an ADI permit from the Road Safety Authority (RSA)

To becoming a Driving Instructor is a rewarding process, and those who qualify have the opportunity to work for others, or have their own small business.

To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in Ireland, you will need to hold driving instructor qualifications that make you eligible to provide fee-based lessons to learner drivers. If you wish to become an ADI you must prove you are a person of good character.

Specific requirements must be met (see below) and you must also go through the Garda vetting process.

You will need to provide the following:

  • Basic personal details including name, address, date of birth, and personal public service (PPS) number
  • Driving licence number and details, including category and number of years held (minimum two year in category).
  • A  current passport-style photograph
  • Details of any convictions
  • Be tax compliant and in possession of a tax clearance certificate
  • Language requirements - English or Irish language

To become a successful driving instructor you need to have advanced driving skills, an ability to convey and teach people new skills, a deep knowledge of the rules of the road, the requirements of the driving test.  Oh, and sometimes nerves of steel.

Become a Driving Instructor - The Test Conducted by the RSA

When you have done your training and are advised to go forward to the test, you may proceed.

The Instructor tests are conducted by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

Note that there are three stages to the ADI exam:

  • Driver theory test
  • Practical driving test
  • Instructional ability test

The three stages of the test must be passed in order, but can be taken as many times as required. All three stages must be successfully passed within a 2 year period to qualify for ADI status.
